About Us

How We Got Started

Nurses at Wexner Hospital have been unionized for years. Through the Ohio Nurses Association, they have been able to secure raises, incentives and safe staffing ratios. Patient care associates deserve the same level of respect and security. The only way to secure this is through joining together to form a Union with the IAM. The IAM, one of the nation’s largest labor unions, is working directly with Patient Care Associates and the Ohio Nurses Association to improve our jobs at Wexner.

Our Mission

We are committed to ensuring we secure better working conditions for ALL Patient Care Associates at Wexner Hospital. We are stronger together. Working in unison, we will be able to secure the positive change we all deserve.

IAM HEALTHCARE

We are 10,000 healthcare professionals and caregivers. We stand together for quality patient care, increased staffing levels, and safe working conditions. We are Registered Nurses, Counselors, Therapists, Licensed Practical Nurses, Firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics, Care Techs, Phlebotomists, Medical Technologists, Dietary Aides and Environmental Service Techs. We work in the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Rehabilitation Facilities, Residential Facilities, Ambulance Services, Dental and Medical offices. Affiliated with the IAM, AFL-CIO.

QUALITY IN, QUALITY OUT

“At our hospital, we fought for a secure retirement, ensuring that our years of dedication to our patients receive proper compensation. As healthcare workers, we invest in the health and well-being of our patients day in and day out. It was imperative that we also invested in ourselves and our futures.”

WORKING BETTER TOGETHER

“Having a shared voice ensures that direct patient care givers have safe working conditions. Safety is our number one priority and our patients. As I AM Healthcare members, we are able to raise safety concerns without fear, and we make sure that those concerns are handled in a timely manner through our workplace committees.”

MAKING HEALTHCARE WORK

“I have seen many changes in healthcare over the last two decades. Our union has been instrumental in making sure that those changes work for patients and providers alike. We have a real say in what happens in our hospital, and that makes all the difference.”

Recent Organizing Campaigns

Military Family Life Counselors

Military Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) from all over the country are standing together in a union to negotiate over quality care for our military and their families. As behavioral health workers, MFLCs understand that part of providing quality patient care means having access to a secure future and a voice on their job. All across the US, MFLCs are standing up against the injustices of their workplaces.

Spectrum Healthcare

Over 2,400 healthcare workers in Ontario, Canada have joined IAM Healthcare. In this historic victory for healthcare workers, Spectrum Healthcare workers ratified their first agreement that included: up to a 10.8% raise, a pension, and enhanced benefits. IAM Healthcare members at spectrum have proven that when we stand together we win!

Federal Healthcare Workers

Thousands of healthcare workers in the DoD and the VA have joined IAM Healthcare. Federal healthcare workers are standing together to improve the quality of care for our military members and those who have served.

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center

Hundreds of healthcare professionals at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center have elected to form a union with IAM Healthcare. Since forming a union: they have negotiated contracts well above the industry standard.

IAM UNION

The IAM represents more than 500,000 workers throughout North America. This includes thousands of healthcare professionals and caregivers. We are fighting for quality patient care, increased staffing levels, and safe working conditions. We are united to ensure patients in the US and Canada get the accessible and affordable care they deserve, and that healthcare professionals in both the public and private sector are provided the necessary resources to get the job done. In addition to healthcare, the IAM represents workers in aerospace, manufacturing, the public-sector, air and rail transportation, and more. This includes workers at companies such as Boeing, Southwest Airlines, Harley-Davidson, Lockheed Martin, Amtrak, United Airlines, Penske Truck, Raytheon, Miller Brewing, and more.

Collective Bargaining

Collective bargaining is the process in which working people, through their unions, negotiate contracts with their employers to determine their terms of employment. By law, the employer is required to bargain over “wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.” This includes wages, health benefits, retirement plans, paid time off, scheduling, and health and safety procedures.

Representation on the Job

Without a union contract, employers can make whatever rules they choose, and change rules whenever they choose. With a union contract, you have rules and legal rights in the workplace that the employer cannot change without negotiating with the union. Everyone covered has the legal right to appeal – that, is to file a “grievance” – if they believe the rules have been broken. Trained IAM stewards and business representatives will meet with management to attempt to resolve the situration.

Member Advantages

There are many benefits, opportunities and discounts available only to union members. The IAM and Union Plus offer  a wide range of services to help members overcome personal, financial and work-related difficulties. IAM certified trained representatives will also assist members and their families in finding help during their most difficult times. MAP/EAP is a free and confidential service for our members and their families.
